O prédio onde hoje funciona a Casa de Cultura de Maricá é um dos mais signifi cativos monumentos históricos da cidade. Embora existam casas de fazenda mais antigas, o prédio da Casa de Cultura, que foi construído como “Casa de Câmara e Cadeia”, forma junto com a Igreja Matriz os mais importantes patrimônios histórico e arquitetônico de Maricá. O projeto do prédio foi aprovado por decreto no ato de fundação da Vila de Santa Maria de Maricá, em 26 de maio de 1814, mas a construção só teve início em 1840, sendo concluído em 1841. O arquiteto responsável pela construção do prédio, Júlio Frederico Koeler, ofi cial do Imperial Corpo de Engenheiros, foi também responsável pela construção do Museu Imperial de Petrópolis e do Centro Histórico de Itaboraí. O prédio foi utilizado como Câmara Municipal e sede da Prefeitura até o final da década de 70, quando foi construído o atual Paço Municipal, permanecendo a Câmara Municipal no prédio histórico, que em 2001 foi transformado em Casa de Cultura. No prédio funciona o Museu Histórico.
The building today houses the Casa de Cultura de Marica is one of the most signifi cant historical monuments. The architect responsible for the construction of the building, Frederick Julius Koeler offi cer of the Imperial Corps of Engineers, was also responsible for the construction of the Imperial Museum of Petrópolis and the historic center of Itaboraí. The building was used as City Hall and City Hall until the late 70’s, when it was built the current City Hall, standing in the town hall, historic building, which in 2001 was transformed into Casa de Cultura. The building also run the Offi ce of the Municipal Culture, History Museum, the Academy.
