Às margens da Lagoa de Araçatiba, aconteceu a chamada “pesca miraculosa”. O Padre José de Anchieta conduziu um grande número de índios para a lagoa para pescar. José de Anchieta antecipava aos índios qual o tipo de peixe seria pescado. A partir disso, a pesca foi tão abundante e variada que a praia se abarrotou de homens. Ainda assim eram poucos para a salga de tantos peixes. Às vezes, em tanta quantidade, que levantavam a rede para que a mesma não se rompesse com o grande peso do pescado.
On the banks of the Araçatiba Lagoon, the so-called “miraculous fi shing” happened. The Priest José de Anchieta took a large number of Indians to the lagoon to fi sh. José de Anchieta anticipated to the Indians what kind of fi sh would be caught. From that fact on, the fi shing was so abundant and varied that the beach was crowded with men. Yet they were few for the salting of so many fi sh. Sometimes, in so much quantity, that they lift ed the net so that it did not tear with the great weight of the fish.
