One of the most important and signifi – cant chapters from the history of Marica was the construction of the Maricá Railroad. Still in the 19th century, more precisely in 1887, the idea of building a Railroad arose in the Maricá community. The most prominent members of local society met and formed a commission composed of the illustrious representatives Dr. Barbosa de Oliveira, Caetano Rodrigues, Cesário Alvim, Barão de Inoã, Father Araújo Gama, Priest Henriques and Colonel Joaquim Mariano Álvares de Castro. Less than a year later, on January 10th, 1888, the year that would be marked by the signing of the Abolition of Slavery in Brazil, the board of the Maricá Railroad met at the ranch of Vigário Araújo Gama. The idea excited the community and mobilized the Marica energies, which were so intense that already in 1889, the year of the elevation of Maricá from the status of Village to City, the fi rst stretch of this magnifi cence was inaugurated, linking the town of Alcântara in São Gonçalo, to Itapeba, in Maricá. Some time later, in 1894 the station was inaugurated downtown, stretching up to Manoel Ribeiro, which at the time was one of the main economic centers of the region, due to its rich agricultural production. It should be noted that this entire construction of the Railroad, from Alcântara to Manoel Ribeiro, was carried out without having a single penny from the empire’s coff ers. All fi nancial and material resources were mobilized by the community itself. The aid from the public power came only years later when, already under the national-development policy of Getúlio Vargas, the Maricá Railroad was incorporated to the Central of Brazil and its route extended until Cabo Frio. For years the train was the main element of integration of Maricá with Niterói and with the cities of the Lagoon Region. It was also an important instrument of economic development, transporting to the consumer centers the fruits of intense local agricultural production and bringing the manufactured products that supplied our consumer market to the city. The fi sh was at that time one of the greatest riches from Marica, and the city was the leader in the ranking of fi sh production in the state the fi rst half of the 20th century. The train was the means of transportation to fl ow the fi shing production to Niterói and São Gonçalo.
